At Lifestyle Homecare, it is of vital importance to us that we can always provide top-quality care.
It is important to us that we always provide that care with dignity, so we’ve listed a few simple actions to ensure you are providing high-quality care that preserves dignity.
When providing care and support, it’s important to give the care and support required with respect and hold onto the person’s dignity no matter what.
When a person consents to receive help at home, it can be a daunting transition from living independently to relying on a carer for support. Enabling your patient to retain their levels of independence and decision-making is of a huge importance for their mental health and well-being. We want to talk about some of the best ways to offer care with dignity.
When you are caring for someone, always remember to:
Allow choices:
Always give the people receiving care a choice and options for everything you are doing. This includes what they require to wear, what they’d wish to eat and what would like to have on the TV, if they would like to shower or not. Allowing your patient to fully understand any decision-making when their routines will positively affect their health and well-being.
Without the liberty to decide, it may feel like we’re losing control over our lives, so it’s important for people to feel empowered and responsibly controlling choices regarding their care.
Communicating with your patient:
When you’re having a conversation with the person you are supporting, make sure you are talking with them as an equal. By being attentive to what they need to mention and being respectful of their wants, needs, and opinions, you’ll develop an affinity and therefore the time you spend with them is going to be quality time that they’re going to enjoy and be excited for. It is important to remember to treat people how you would like to be treated yourself.
Preserving dignity during personal care:
Supporting somebody with their hygiene and personal care can be a very intimate thing to do. Always ensure that you offer enough privacy so that they don’t feel vulnerable. When assisting your patient to shower or wash, give them privacy, if possible, while wrapping themselves in a towel and their dignity is retained. Not everyone seems to be comfortable with being naked around people, especially a carer that they may not have met before, it should be decided by the patient’s own personal preference. With a strip wash, keep the higher half covered whilst doing the lower half, and so on.
