Meet Karen, whose remarkable journey from Lifestyle by Homecare Services to achieving her dream of becoming a registered nurse is a testament to resilience, determination, and a deep-rooted commitment to caring for others. Here, Karen will share her career journey with Lifestyle and how it shaped my path.
Karen’s journey commenced in September 2019 when she embarked on her career in care at Lifestyle by Homecare Services. Working intimately within the homes of service users, she discovered an unparalleled joy. She fostered independence while offering unwavering support where needed. Working so closely with people Karen says that one of her favourite parts of the jobs were the people.
‘I really enjoyed being able to look after the service users within their own homes, encouraging them to maintain their independence where possible whilst offering support when needed. I used to love listening to stories of their lives and families.’
The role granted her the privilege of not only caring for individuals but also listening to their life stories, fostering an empathetic connection that would shape her path forward.
However, it was more than just the care—it was the profound impact of supporting vulnerable individuals that fueled Karen’s desire to delve deeper into the healthcare realm. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic heightened her appreciation for the tireless efforts of healthcare workers. Witnessing the dedication of her colleagues and the NHS during this challenging time served as a pivotal moment, propelling her towards a new goal: becoming an Adult Nurse.
Determined to realize her aspirations, Karen made the decision to pursue a 3-year Adult Nursing BSc (Hons) degree at UCLAN. Balancing studies at 40 years old, amid a pandemic and while caring for her three children, she exemplified unwavering perseverance. During the pursuit of her next career step into healthcare Karen said
‘I was fully supported by Homecare with colleagues providing references and kind words of encouragement and support. The training received at Homecare was outstanding and was transferable to the wards and other clinical placements during my degree. It gave me the confidence to provide safe, effective care to my patients.’
The support received from Homecare Services was instrumental. Colleagues provided references and encouragement, bolstering her resolve to transition into higher education. Karen completed her degree in August 2023. She proudly secured a Bachelor of Science with second class honours in Nursing with Registered Nurse (Adult) from University of Central Lancashire. Her upcoming graduation in Preston marks a significant milestone in her fulfilling journey in healthcare.
The skills honed during her tenure at Homecare Services served as a cornerstone in her professional development. Communication skills, crucial in healthcare, were finely honed through interactions with service users and colleagues. As well as the training offered significantly contributing to her success during her degree and beyond.
With aspirations to delve into a master’s degree and potentially specialise further, her journey in healthcare is an ever-evolving narrative of ambition and dedication.
